The cholitas escaladoras are Bolivian Aymara women who climb some of the highest peaks in the Andes wearing their traditional polleras. I was moved to paint them by their strength, their courage and the way they defy prejudice without giving up their identity. They represent women occupying spaces that were denied to them for a long time.
